Researcher from MUST Awarded Prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is one of the world’s most prestigious organizations supporting international academic exchange and research excellence. Its fellowships are awarded through a highly competitive selection process to outstanding researchers across disciplines.

According to publicly available information from the Foundation’s official website, including the “Promote the Humboldt Foundation” section and the “Explore the Network” database, only a limited number of researchers from Mongolia (approximately eight) are currently part of the global Humboldt network. This highlights both the selectivity of the program and the growing international engagement of Mongolian scientists.

In 2026, Dr. Ariuntogos Munkhjargal, a researcher at the Research Center for Stratigraphy and Paleontology, School of Geology and Mining Engineering, Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST), was awarded the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers.

Dr. Ariuntogos completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at MUST before pursuing her PhD at Goethe University of Frankfurt, Germany, with full funding from the DAAD. She graduated with distinction and has since continued her research in the field of Devonian stratigraphy, carbonate sedimentology, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.

Her current research focuses on Devonian bioherms in southern Mongolia, integrating sedimentological, microfacies, and geochemical approaches within a global comparative framework.

Importantly, Dr. Ariuntogos is the first researcher affiliated with MUST to receive the Humboldt Research Fellowship while actively working at the university. This achievement represents a significant milestone for the institution and reflects the growing research capacity and international visibility of MUST.

Through the Humboldt Fellowship, she will continue her research in Germany, further strengthening scientific collaboration between Mongolia and leading international institutions.

This achievement also serves as an encouragement to young researchers in Mongolia:

Prestigious international fellowships such as the Humboldt Research Fellowship are attainable through strong academic preparation, a clear research vision, and persistence. Researchers interested in these opportunities are encouraged to explore official information and the global network via the Humboldt Foundation’s website.

The Mongolian University of Science and Technology congratulates Dr. Ariuntogos Munkhjargal on this outstanding achievement and encourages its researchers and students to actively engage in international scientific programs.
