Research

The main thrust at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology is on goal-oriented research and development (R&D) relevant to the country's needs. With these aims and objectives, the University is in charge of ensuring that high quality research of direct relevance to Mongolia's needs is pursued in all schools of the university.

The university is setting up linkages between the University and industry in both the public and private sectors to facilitate contract research benefiting both parties. Moreover, our researchers co-ordinate their research activities within the university as well as research jointly undertaken by the University's faculty members, public organizations and private sector. About 60 percent of our faculty are members of the Mongolian and joint research projects teams.

The management of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology also encourages and activates research activities in order to upgrade the quality of overall teaching and learning within the university. To keep the University's faculty abreast of the latest developments in their respective areas of specialization and in order to enhance the scope and pace of research and development work at the MUST, nearly 40 research centers and 6 institutes have been established. 96 chaired professorships accomplished about 150 research works in 2009. There are 2 foreign invested companies and 3 MUST projects under development at the university's technology incubator center in 2010.

 

Textile Institute

The Textile Institute supports the local textile and allied industries achieve global competitiveness through utilization of indigenous resources, and development of technical competence in textile production and quality assurance.

The word "textile", which originally referred to woven fabrics, now covers the broad field of products made from fibers. The scope of the Textile Institute covers all the textile industries which include: fiber, yarn and fabric manufacturing; dyeing and finishing; production of knitwear and making-up of clothing; and the distribution and retailing of textile products to personal and commercial markets.

The Institute is mandated to perform the following functions:

1.Conduct applied research and development for the textile industry
2.Undertake the transfer of completed researches to end-users or via linkage units of other   government agencies
3.Provide technical services and training programs

Mining Institute

The Mining Institute is playing main role in to develop technique and technology in mining and carrying out research works in the area of mining division, especially for process technique and economical fundamental documents, drawing and project for use hard rock with coal, gold, non-ferrous metal, and non-metal. The Institute has several units with next fields: to process and get through developed and new technology for mining industry, process drawing and experiments for mining, accredited laboratory control for coal quality.  

System Science Research Center

The Center was established in 1998 as an interdepartmental laboratory dedicated to research and education in the theory and applications of dynamics and control systems.

The mission of the Center is to lead cross-disciplinary research and education emphasizing engineering systems and making fundamental contributions to basic systems sciences and methodologies.

The Center serves to foster the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of dynamics and controls research.

Institute of Multimedia Communication

The Institute of Multimedia Communication Center was established in 2000 for serving to foster the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of dynamics and controls research.

The Institute conducts researches on the main aspects of multimedia communication in interdisciplinary co-operation. It comprises sectors on telecommunications, information technology, on removing digital divide for rural area, signal processing, multimedia technology and image processing.  Recently, the Institute has performed a number of projects assigned by the State and international organizations such as speech recognition technology and software development, computer use by visually impaired people and etc.

Institute for Heating Technology and Industrial Ecology

Established in 1971 at the University, the Institute for Heating Technology and Industrial Ecology is a leading institution for interdisciplinary education, research, and advocacy in energy and environmental policy.

The Institute has continued to grow and is involved in carrying research in practical implementation of theoretical aspects of thermal mass exchange and energy combustion, researches in thermal physics, metal physical and thermal supply, enhancement of efficiency and effectiveness of existing stove and boiler models, improvement of current thermal equipment, study on reducing of toxic influence of industrial technology to environment and nature. It is also embarking on a research program in sustainable development and industrial ecology particularly in urban area. In addition, the Institute is activating independence action and processed technical and economical validity of medium and small enterprise as results of some research works.

Distance Education Center

The Center for Distance Education, a constituent of the University, is committed to provide new career-oriented educational opportunities at the bachelor and master degree levels programs offered at the university.  DeC offers the use of new technologies, online education and other related fields.

The main objective of this center attempts to remove the barriers of time, space, past educational experience, and, to a great extent, level of income. By focussing on innovation in learning, University makes it possible to earn a university education regardless of where you live or work, or your commitments to families or careers

Research and Development Institute of Light Industry

The Research and Development Institute of Light Industry is established in 1971 and it is the first state-owned research Institute in area of Mongolian light industry sector.

The Center pursues excellence in research and education in light industry, including wool and fur processing, hide and leather processing, and development of SMEs. The Center provides the best possible environment for the pursuit of research by faculty members, research associates, graduate students and undergraduate research assistants.

The Center undertakes research on projects of relevance to industry and government. The Center provides undergraduate research assistants with expert training and with an exposure to research in a professional engineering environment in preparation for careers in industry. The Center Lab provides graduate students with opportunities for research of industrial relevance in pursuit of advanced degrees.

The Center is dedicated to the development of collaborative research and educational programs with local universities, industry and with national and international laboratories.

Research Center of Progressive Building Material

The market for sustainable construction products and processes is growing rapidly. The country needs durable, affordable, and energy-efficient housing. In response to this need, the Research Center is carrying out study and testing of new building technology from isolator wall materials and localization and development of new technologies on building materials.

Reconstruction Research Center of Diagnosis and Design

The main activities of the Center are related with diagnosis and estimation of building constructions, analysis the building construction; designing of reinforced drawing and geological analysis of soil.

Research Center of Geo Techniques

Main fields of activities of the Center are research and assessment of climatic condition of buildings, road and bridge constructions, research of thermal regulation of auto road embank; and analysis of geological engineering of soil.

Research Center of Architecture and Design

The Center is involved in producing of architectural designs requested by individuals and organization and survey architecture and urban planning.

Research Center of Water Ecology

The Center, a research component of the School of Civil Engineering has been established in respond to increased awareness and concerns of the public and governmental interests and research and development reflect an increasing concern for the enhancement and preservation of the quality of water resources for all facets of water usage and study of municipal water supply and treatment systems. Its activities are aimed at improvement of the quality of natural water; protection of water resources from pollution; refining of construction and composition of water structures; experimentation and survey to renovate water cleaning technology.

Training Center of Building Production

This Training Center offers practical trainings for building and repair buildings for our students and provides vocational training programs for construction workers such as welder, carpenter and bricklayer in its fully equipped training workshops.

Training and Development Center for Automation

The Center was established in September 2001 aimed at research and study of automated computer management systems for industrial applications. The Center has developed and implemented a number of contracted works and researches as Traffic Cross Lights Control System, digital time-table board for sport activities, and benchmarks for micro processing laboratories. At present the Center is involved in research for automated systems models for measuring of geometrical parameters in railway operations, automated systems for wells by application of programming logic controllers, Neuro-Fuzzy systems, and systems modeling of using GPS.

Research and Training Center for Small Medium Enterprises

This Research and Training Center was established in 2003 with aims on providing appropriate business environment and strengthening of capacity buildings for entrepreneurs through training, consulting and building information system based on research results.

The Centre has research strengths in quantitative analysis of developments in the SME sector. These include fast growth firms, start-ups, financing, marketing and human resource. It specializes in assessing the effectiveness of public policy towards SMEs.

The Center staff contributes to all levels of teaching within the University at diploma, undergraduate and graduate levels.

To promote the development of Small and Medium sized enterprises (SMEs) through  research,  training and   business incubation activities.

  • To nurture SMEs through providing business incubation activities;
  • To support the improvement of cooperation and linkages between SMEs and Large firms;
  • To evolve into a National Center;

Center of CISCO Academy in Mongolia

The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a comprehensive e-learning program that provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The Networking Academy delivers web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and preparation for industry standard certifications.

The Internet enables anytime, anywhere learning for all students, regardless of location, socio-economic status, gender, or race. With the United Nations Development Program, the United States Agency for International Development, and the International Telecommunication Union, Cisco has made the Academy program available to students in Least Developed Countries to help them build their country's economies.

First Cisco Networking Academy has been established at CSMS of MTU in Mongolia in 1999 sponsored by APDIP (Asia Pacific Devolopment Information Program), UNDP (United Nations Devolopment Program ) and Cisco.

It' has been extended from Local Academy to Regional Academy in 2004. Cisco RA in Mongolia has two local Academies in Darkhan Local Academy in Darkhan-Uul aimag and School of Networking Local Academy at ITIE of MUST. It has more than 150 graduates already. Currently there are over 300 students enrolled.

Nutrition Research Center

The Center strives to improve the health of all Mongolians by: creating and testing nutrition interventions to improve health; assessing how an individual's environment and genetics affect nutrient metabolism; and providing reliable and reproducible research results for the development of national nutrition policies. Along with graduate students the faculty staff conduct basic and applied research to expound the role of diet in supporting good health. In the process, the Center generates more knowledge about healthful foods and diets.

TORFL Center

The Center for Testing of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) was established in October of 2002 with aim to assist Mongolians in study and work in all territory of the Russian Federation, for all Russian establishments & the organizations abroad.

Testing for obtaining the Certificate presents one of the components of the State Testing system defining different levels of the command of Russian as a foreign language.

The TORFL is a 5-level test based on Standards of the Russian Educational System and Requirements for foreign learners approved by Russian Ministry of Education.

The system includes:

BASIC (TORFL level 0) - Obtaining a positive grade on this level testifies to the students have the ability to communicate in a limited number of the most familiar and everyday situations in a Russian-speaking environment.

INTERMEDIATE (TORFL level 1) - Obtaining a positive grade on this level testifies to the Intermediate level of communication competence which enables the applicant to satisfy his/her primary communication needs in everyday life, cultural, educational & professional areas of communication .The above Certificate is requires for the admission to higher education's institutions of Russia. A TORFL Level 1 certificate is a prerequisite for entering Russian institutions with obligatory further studies of the Russian language.

ADVANCED (TORFL level 2) Obtaining a positive grade on this level testifies to the Upper Intermediate level of communication competence which enables the applicant to satisfy his communication needs in all areas of communication, doing professional work in Russian in qualities of the expert of corresponding types: humanitarian (except for philology), engineering-technique, natural-science, etc. The above Certificate is required for the receiving the diploma of Bachelor & Magistrate degrees (except for Bachelor & Magistrate of Philology degree) of education's institutions of Russia.

Museum of Geology and Mineral Resources

Over 3.000 million years of geological evolution, including many violent upheavals and sudden volcanic activity, have resulted in the extraordinarily complicated framework of the Mongolian territory and account for the great variety of its minerals.

More than 5.000 mineral deposits and occurrences comprising over 400 different minerals have been discovered all over the country.

The Museum has three sections:

The Geological Section of the Museum displays the deep structure of the territory, the different rock types, including the oldest grey gneiss, serpentinites and granites, basalts, and other igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, such as limestones, slates and fossilized old marine fauna and continental flora.

The Mineral Wealth Section demonstrates wide range of raw materials for fuel power engineering, chemical, rare earth's rare metallic, Polymetallic, nonferrous and ferrous metallurgical industries.

The Mineral Section shows all mineral types classified into the following groups: nuggets, sulfides, oxides, and silicates of various structures, carbonates, phosphates, tungstates, sulfates, fluorides and chlorides.

A special stand demonstrates samples of new minerals discovered in Mongolia, such as Armstrongite, Mongolite, and rock of Ongonite. The number of minerals on display totals 3.000 in all.

Geosciences Center

The Geoscience Center has been established in February 2000 and its activities target at understanding crust evolution, area selection for mineral exploration. Major strengths are a complex geological study of Central Asia to interpret fundamental Earth processes

The Centers aims at providing research in petrology and geochemistry of magmatic rocks, develop geochemical database, training in petrology, geochemistry and metallogeny, consulting on petrological and geochemical work for industry, to provide radiogenic age determination and providing mineral deposit study.

Strategic outcomes of the Center are development of Central Asia's magmatism evolution and related mineralization, the integration of petrological and geochemical data that aimed on provision of data and models for enabling exploration of the full potential of mineral resources in Mongolia

Geoinformatics center

For the country like Mongolia the application of remote sensing techniques is the best tool to study natural resources and land use management.  Thus, the Center was established in February 2000 with the main goal of introducing remote sensing and GIS technology into various disciplines of earth sciences.

Main field of research are in active continental deformation, mounting building processes, glaciology, and earthquake geology. The territory of Mongolia is an ideal field laboratory to study many geological processes such as behavior of active faults, continental rifting and volcanism, natural hazards, paleoclimate, global climate change, glaciology and many others. We also intend to broaden our research work with land resource specialists such as soil researchers, biology, botany, agriculture, land use planners etc.

The Center has got its own geological and topography database including Landsat TM, ASTER and SPOT images of Mongolian territory, geological maps at selected sites.

The Center is aiming to become a main research center in the field of remote sensing and GIS for the local specialists as well as providing international courses from neighboring countries.

Research Center for Stratigraphy and Paleontology

The mission of the Center is to advance the sciences of stratigraphy and paleontology in Mongolia by engaging in internationally recognized research, standardizing the stratigraphic nomenclature of Mongolia and improving its consistency with international standards, and by disseminating this information to government, industry, and other academic institutions.

Currently the Center is carrying out projects on Standardizing stratigraphic nomenclature and conventions used in geological mapping, which is being actively funded by the Mongolian government; reconstructing the geologic history of Mongolia, including the age, origin, and distribution of mineral resources, developing a set of reliable indicators for discovering ore deposits and other projects focused on Mongolian tectonics, stratigraphy, and paleontology along with colleagues from the USA, Japan, Russia, China, Australia, and South Korea

Clothing Research Center

The Center for clothing research was established in 2000 with aims for driving the future of the national apparel, soft goods, and sewn products industries with research and consulting products and services focused on technology development. The Center's initiatives include the broad investigation and demonstration of supporting technologies; education, training and consulting services to strategically and tactically implement business practices; and research and development of technology voids.

Printing and Training Publishing Center

The center is currying activities in training and training of human resource for printing and publishing sector of Mongolia. In addition, the Center provides advisory and information dissemination for SMEs in printing and publishing areas for increasing of competitive advantages at the national level. This Center is also a place where students enrolled in Printing Technology training program could acquire practical experience. The Center is equipped with modern printing technology.

Water Research Center

The main aims of Water Research Center is to provide statewide outreach and education focused on critical water issues affecting Mongolian water resources and to provide expertise on state and regional water management and policy. The graduate program in Water Resources Science also is administered by the Center. As the focal point for a broad range of research, education and information exchange related to water resources, the links faculty and student researchers with practicing professionals and citizens to address water resources issues. This facilitates effective delivery of research results to citizens and decision-makers and opens new avenues for multi-disciplinary and interagency partnerships.

Research and Training Center of Non-Destructive Testing

The Center focuses on generic, industrially relevant research and includes the transfer of those results to industry and the education of the future workforce as central elements of its mission. 

The Center provides a unique environment in which academic researchers and industry partners can work together on technology issues that affect the broad spectrum of NDE practitioners.  The Center seeks to serve as a shared, corporate research laboratory in non-destructive testing.

Research Center of Progressive Technical Materials

The Centre is a research centre committed to interdisciplinary work on advanced materials and technology. The scope of this work covers a wide spectrum of research in theoretical and applied areas.

The Center's objectives are to carry out fundamental and applied research in advanced materials, to train technical and academic personnel in these areas, and to disseminate the knowledge gained from the research through scientific publications, conferences, workshops and seminars.

As part of the University, the Center serves as a teaching centre involving graduate students in the latest developments and applications of materials research.

Analytical Laboratory

The Analytical Laboratory facilities provide analytical services to faculty and graduate students within the University and to the general public as well. The Laboratory performs a wide scope of inorganic analyses on a large number of different sample matrices, such as soil, plant tissue, water, sludge, wood ash, and compost

Technology Research Center

 The Center was founded in 2004 and is responsible for researches on wear and tear of mechanical components and parts, research and development of processing technologies for sea buckthorn fruit, leaves and bark, engineering technology reducing of wool and cashmere waste and psychological analysis of managerial staff.. Currently the Center is collaborating with Japan National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology on complete sea buckthorn processing technologies.

Center of Applied Mathematics

The mission of the Center for Applied Mathematics (CAM) is to promote research and advanced study in applied and computational mathematics. CAM administers the graduate field in Applied Mathematics. Graduate studies in the Field of Applied Mathematics are the responsibility of a faculty drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, economics, electrical engineering, management, mathematics, mechanical engineering, operations research, physics, and theoretical and applied mechanics.

The Center's faculty members work in the following principal areas of research: analysis, applied logic and theory of computing, computational mathematics (computer algebra, numerical analysis, and optimization), discrete and combinatorial mathematics, information and control theory, mechanics and dynamics (continuum mechanics, dynamical systems, fluid dynamics, and statistical mechanics), probability, scientific computing, and statistics.

Metal Experimental Research Center

The objectives of the Center are threefold: first of all the Center is committed to conduct R & D relating to the manufacture and use of metallic materials (metals, semimetals, and materials that have these as a component), then it designed to promote metallic materials-related industries by achieving new functionality, improving the quality and expanding usage of metallic materials, and by encouraging innovation in manufacturing processes and at last the Center contributes toward economic growth and enhanced quality of life in Mongolia

Center for Ecology and Sustainable Development

The various research programs offered through the Center for Ecology and Sustainable Development are employed to address both theoretical and policy-relevant issues in order to widen public discourse and action on the key interrelated energy, environmental and social issues of our time. The research activates are carried out in the field of ecological studies for sustainable development of mineral resources, environmental information technology study and methods of engineering and ecological modeling, economic and social issues in regional environment changes, issues on reducing of negative impacts on environment and assessment of ecology and environmental risks.

The graduate academic programs of the Center can prepare students for careers in environmental research, policy development, industrial compliance, environmental consulting, academics, and many other related areas. The courses of study offered through the Center are not only academically challenging, but also provide a sound framework for career development.

Blasting Materials Research Center

The Center for Explosives Research and Education was formed in to link academic programs that traditionally have a long-standing history of explosive engineering and science education and research at the University The Center was established to foster education and research in explosives science and engineering at MUST and with other institutes of higher education that support explosives-related activities, promote strong leadership within the academic community in theoretical and applied explosives engineering, enhance the international visibility of explosives education and research at the university, and provide continuity in explosives research spawned at the national laboratories.

Within the Center, students work with faculty who are leaders in both theoretical and applied explosives engineering. Research and education specializations within the various disciplines include explosives chemistry, rock blasting and fragmentation, structural vibrations and control of vibrations, processing with explosives (consolidation, welding, forming), shock and detonation physics and modeling of detonations and material response

Research Center of Renewable Energy and High Voltage

The Research Center of Renewable Energy and High Voltage is research-training-industry center with goal to get through science and technical achievement for industry. The Center is carrying out basic and applied research work in area to construct and test suitable renewal energy generation for Mongolian climate and natural condition and nomadic livestock, to do measurement and experiment on high voltage equipment that used in energy section, to process developed industrial technology use high influence of electrical and magenta field   for Mongolian condition. The electricity used currently every day produces air pollution and greenhouse gases with serious consequences on our environment and health, globally and locally. Generating electricity through wind power and other renewable energy technologies can greatly reduce that damage. Thus the Center exists to promote education and research in renewable energy technologies.

Center of Energy Conservation

The Energy Conservation Center, contributes to promoting the efficient use of energy, protection of the global warming and sustainable development.

The Center is an interdisciplinary academic support unit focused on issues related to energy and resource use, alternatives and conservation. The Center's mission is to serve the campus, local, state and regional communities in maintaining ongoing programs for the examination of state-of-the-art energy conservation and end-use practices, investigation of alternative solutions to contemporary energy problems, development projections and implications of the results of these solutions and dissemination of findings to the appropriate publics - professionals, educators, policy planners, students and laypersons.

Research Center of Industrial Automation

The Center is dedicated for the furtherance of technology in industrial automation and machine intelligence through research. It is committed to explore new technologies to broaden the horizons of research and academic activities in the field of industrial automation. The Center conducts key scientific for developing projects assigned by the State, and has the ability of design, implementation and employee training of major automation engineering projects of industrial processes.

Research Center of Advanced Heat Consumption Technology

The Research Center was founded in 2001 and committed to carry out research on improvement efficiency and process central heating supply; development and implementation of advanced technology for heating system

In the recent three years the Center completed a number of researches such as enhancement of efficiency in heating supply system for Mineral Processing Plant of Erdenet Mining Corporation and studies on public house heating losses in urban areas.

Experimental and Research Center for Boiler

The Experimental and Research Center for Boiler at the University is a special institution to study combustion technology of coal burning boilers and was established in 2002.  The Center provides researches in the main fields as reconstruction of boilers for steam and heating water and implementation of advanced technology in this area, development of portable boilers for water heating suitable for rural area in fuel quality and structure, study of environmental impacts of heating generation and research on reducing of pollution and research of environmentally clean technology in heating processes.

Refrigerating Technology Research Center

The Refrigeration Technology Research Center is established in 2002 and the main goal of the Center is introducing the world leading refrigerating technology in Mongolia. Since its founding, the Center has provided a forum for industry to coordinate and share pre-competitive research on energy-efficient, ozone-safe technologies. Research within the Center is conducted as collaboration between industry and the university--it is a collaboration driving innovation.

The Center research program involves graduate students and faculty staff. Students are attracted by the opportunity to participate in industrially relevant research.

Information and Communication Technology Training Center

The Information and Communication Technology Center is established in 2002 by financial support of the Government of India and is carrying out national and international specialized and certified training for students, engineers and employers of organization using communication and information technology. In frame of this financial support there has been also created five Internet community centers in provinces such as Selenge, Umnugobi, Khentii, Gobi-Altai and Arkhangai as branches of this Center.

The Center offers training for students and engineers in Java, Microsoft, SunMicrosytems and Cisco platforms in specialized `laboratories.

The satellite video conferencing facility links the Center with the National Informatics Centre in New Delhi.

EWSD Training Center

The Training centre provides training for modern IT, principles of digital communication station design, architecture and operation principles of modern telecommunication systems, administration, operation and maintenance of these systems since 1999. The training centre has all necessary test and bench equipment that allows enriching theoretical knowledge and gaining practical experience.

Continuous innovation processes require constant training, making staff qualification one of the most important advantages in the competitive activity.  Regular staff training is an eligible investment, since efficient use of modern telecommunication equipment is a steady source of profit earning.

The National Centre for Distance Education

The National Centre for Distance Education is a governmental organization under the Ministry of Science, Technology, Education and Culture of Mongolia. The Centre was established in 2004 to support the human development through offering distance education programs for retraining of secondary school teachers in rural areas and other SOI(School on the internet) center

SOI(School on the internet) center

STIT conducted to SOI(School On  Internet) ASIA Project in January 2005. SOI asia project utilize satellite based Internet to provide Internet environments in a less expensive, easy to deploy, and more feasible way for the universities located in the regions where Internet environments are insufficiently developed; conducts research and development of the necessary technology for IT human resource development in Asia while using the environments; and proposes, through field experiments, a new educational methodology for universities in Japan as well as educational institutions abroad.

STIT share the distribution of live lectures from Japan as well as archived lectures with seventeen universities and research institutes partners in eleven countries. 

LabVIEW training center

LabVIEW training center was established in April, 2006 for offering a wide variety of LabVIEW training program on "National Instrument" software. This laboratory uses the LabVIEW graphical programming enviroment and techniques for building application in labVIEW, such as test and measurement, data acquisition, instrument control, data logging, measurement analysis and report generation. It is possible to participate not only engineers and students in the field of ICT but also engineers and students of mechanical, electrical and chemical fields.

Regional Food Research Center  in Darkhan

The Centre established in 2005 undertakes scientific research and provides technological services to the dairy processing and food ingredients sectors of Mongolian regional industry. The Center has own Laboratory of Food Safety and Nutrition that carries out several related tasks such as the evaluation of the analytical methods of food contaminants and receiving and maintaining reference samples. The Research Centre as an integral component of a national food safety programme assists to the development, implementation and evaluation of regional policies and programmes. Such research of food safety activities are focused through sound scientific risk assessment. Therefore, efforts of the Center are made to provide essential resources, encourage the development and use of national and regional networks and databases and provide the necessary foundational research training.

Building Materials Research Center

The Center has started functioning in the early 2005 along main distinct lines as research on local building and foundation materials, conduct tests on local and imported building materials and on foundation soils. The Center has own materials research laboratory and testing workshop.
