School of Mining Engineering

The School of Mining Engineering has one of the most successful growth rates of any of the engineering school/departments, consistently having an increase of students to its courses. The main objective of the program has always been the production of quality mining engineers.

The School emphasizes engineering as it applies to the exploration and development of mineral resources and upon the economics of the business of mining. The program offers specialization in exploration, mining or mineral beneficiation.

Students are prepared for job opportunities with mining and construction companies, consulting and research firms, equipment manufacturers, investment and commodity firms in the private sector, as well as with state agencies.

Mining engineers may aspire to, and achieve, the highest positions in the industry: operating or engineering management, government agency director or entrepreneur. Starting salaries are among the highest in the engineering profession.

The School of Mining Engineering has a strong research base that is closely linked to industry. A feature of the school is that a large proportion of the academic staff are drawn from industry and have strong practical, educational and research experience that is integrated into the course. For example, three have worked as mine managers and two have lead major industry research establishments.
